Dog Hair care products 101There are a number of hair care products on the market that can be used to groom your dog. What is important is that you get the right electric trimmer, comb, brush, stripping knife or grooming glove for your dogs type of hair. The easiest coat to maintain is a smooth coat. All you will really need is a grooming mitt or glove. Brushes are generally meant for dogs with long, thick or silky coats. A slicker brush will remove dead hair, debris and tangles from your dogs coat. Some are also designed to be especially useful during shedding season. Often in combination with a slicker brush you will need a flea comb and fine comb. The flea comb is useful in detecting and removing fleas and eggs and for grooming around the face, while the fine comb can remove tangles and mats. To remove thick winter coats from long and silky coated dogs an undercoat rake is very helpful. This will reduce shedding and decrease the development of thick mats which can be painful for a dog. Thick stubborn mats that are resistant to brush and comb can be removed with a dematting rake or they can be carefully trimmed off. There are also shedding blades and shedding combs for thick and longs coated dogs. These help to remove large volumes of hair quickly and easily to reduce shedding around the home. They are particularly useful during shedding season and for dogs with shedding problems. For dogs with sensitive skin and those that are prone to irritation there are pin and bristle brushes. The pins are coated for comfort and the bristles are soft nylon. These are good for everyday grooming to reduce irritation and increase comfort. They also help to promote a healthy shinny coat. Striping Knives are for dogs with wiry coats. Striping needs to be done every six months or they need to be trimmed regularly. Striping is time consuming and it is often preferable that it is done by a professional. For those do-it-yourself people Electric Trimmers are a useful tool to have. Dogs with wiry, silky or non-shedding coats will need to be trimmed. Some dogs will only need trimming around the face, ears and paws, while others will need all over trimming. This depends on the type of coat and the hair style that you are interested in maintaining. Most trimmers will come with enough attachments to fulfill your trimming needs, but for dogs that require a lot of trimming there are deluxe electric trimmers that will allow you to do almost anything. Scissors can be used to do some trimming, but always be very careful because the dog might jump or move and it is easy to cut their thin skin.
