Proper Nail Care for dogs

A dogs nails should be cut on a regular basis to prevent torn and split nails. However, not all dogs will need their nails to be trimmed. Some dogs will naturally wear their nails down.

It is a good idea to have your a vet tech, veterinarian or groomer show you how to clip your dogs nails the first time, but it is a simple process that is easy to learn.

You always want to cut the nail from the bottom to the top. Slide the nail between the cutting edges of the clippers and stay in the whitish part of the nail. The pink area of the nail has blood vessels and will bleed if it is cut.

When you are ready and you think you have the clippers positioned properly, squeeze the handles firmly and make a clean, decisive cut. Then you can either file down the edges of the nail, or let your dog wear them smooth on his own.

It is always a good idea to keep some styptic powder of gel on hand incase you cut too short and the nail starts to bleed. Just apply a small amount to the bleeding nail and it works right away to stop the bleeding. Another option is to hold a tissue tightly against the nail for one to three minutes. Lastly you can just leave it and the bleeding should stop in 5 to 7 minutes, if it doesn't give your veterinarian a call
