By Alia KubeNew ways to maintain your dog's health with Raised Dog FeedersIn the past dog bowls and dishes always sat on the floor. For small dogs, this is alright because they do not have to reach too far the get to the ground, but what if you have a medium or large breed dog. Raised dog feeders are excellent for breeds such as German Shepherds, Labs, or Collies. Testing has shown that having a raised dog feeder is more ergonomic for medium and large breed dogs and it helps them to digest their food better. They are not having to crouch or reach down for their food and so it is easier for them to relax while eating. Raised dog feeders are also beneficial for senior dogs. As dogs become older they loose their flexibility and stability, just as we do. Often it can be difficult for an older dog to reach down for food, so they will lay down on the ground to eat. However, even laying down and standing up can become laborious for older dogs, especially if they become arthritic. The difficulty can cause a dog to eat less frequently, simply because it is uncomfortable for them to get at their food. It is important that your dog is comfortable when he is eating. This means reducing stress on the spin and other joints and muscles. That is what raised dog feeders are designed to do. They place the food at an appropriate height so that your dog has easy access to his food. To ensure that you choose a raised dog feeder that is the appropriate height you should measure you pet's wither height, from the ground to the top of the front shoulder. The feeder should stand about 6 inches or 15cm below the wither height for medium and large dogs. For small dogs approximately 4 inches or 10cm below the wither height is ideal.
